So, I stumbled on this charming little website our new Congress has set up, America Speaking Out. Everyday Americans, like you and I can post what they want for the country. I'm pretty sure it was intended for conservatives to talk about whatever conservatives talk about, but, well... it looks like progressives have been enjoying themselves. I'm now a member, screen name TeenagedPundit.
In the five minutes I've spent on America Speaking Out, I've published two ideas.
"I think the government should recognize that all families, regardless of background or gender of the parents, are all equal and should all have equal rights. Repeal DOMA."
"As well as freedom of religion, there needs to be more freedom from religion. While a separation of church and state is never said anywhere explicitly in the Constitution, it is there. As an atheist, I'm sick of all the Under God stuff in the government."
Standard and progressive, right? Vaguely troll-ish as well.
Now, I hate trolls just as much as the next person. And my actions do look a little troll-like, I'm sure. But let me just say this.
On the homepage of America Speaking Out, it says this: "The American people have chosen a new majority in the House of Representatives. Americans have been clear about what they want: more jobs, less spending, and a more open Congress that respects and abides by the Constitution. Please continue to engage in the debate here at America Speaking Out."
I am just continuing to engage in the debate, like it says. The new Congress wants to reflect the will of the American people. I'm an American person, even though I cannot vote yet. And I want Congress to reflect my will. If they don't, I'll be more than happy to vote John Boehner and his minions out of office.
It makes me angry when those self-righteous, hypocritical GOP and Tea Partyers say "Oh, we want to best reflect the will of the American people and bring about the American dream" and whatever else they claim. Guess what Republicans? A very, very small number of people actually agree with you. Most people are apathetic and vote with their pocketbooks, but most people honestly believe the Democrats can do better. So you Republicans in Congress better get used to the idea that Americans like health care and world peace and don't hate gay people. And you better be ready to hear it.
And I don't care if I'm trolling America Speaking Out, I'm enjoying myself.
